Life’s Dance

Katmai National Park, Alaska, United States

The process of photography often begins with waiting, in the quiet hours before a moment unfolds. These bear cubs, tumbling and wrestling, remind us there is a time for everything: A time to learn, a time to play, and a time to dance. Sometimes, it’s about finding the balance of doing all three at once.

Patience is often spoken about, but rarely is it easy to hold. In wildlife photography, it’s the unseen ingredient that turns hours of stillness into meaningful images. On this evening, after waiting and watching most of the day, Alaska’s golden light finally lingered around 11 p.m., just as the siblings began to play. There are no guarantees in the wild, only trust and faith that the right moment will eventually come together.

These cubs of the year (also known as COYs) roughhoused under their mother’s watchful eye as she grazed on the sedges nearby, ever alert, protecting her three cubs from other bears.
