Soda Butte Creek, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, United States
In the northeastern section of Yellowstone National Park, the Northern Herd makes their way across Soda Butte Creek, moving back toward Lamar Valley, where it will spend the winter months. Yellowstone’s bison herds are the last continuously wild, free-ranging population remaining in the United States. Carrying a legacy stretching back thousands of years, some bison herds migrate more than 1,000 miles each year in search of food and shelter, following ancient routes etched into the land.
The seasonal journey of the bison is a powerful reminder of the ongoing brittleness of survival on the American plains. Here, though, the bison’s steady crossings echo a timeless rhythm of life on the move, bound to the turning of seasons.
