12 x 8″, Hahnemühle Photo Rag Silent Hunter of the Snow

Phantom Lake, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, United States.

On a crisp winter morning in Yellowstone National Park, a red fox prowls the snow-covered meadows in search of mice and voles hidden beneath the surface. With ears tuned for the faintest rustle, the fox can pinpoint prey beneath feet of snow, then leap high and dive headfirst to capture it, a technique known as “mousing.” Focused on its task, this fox nonetheless gradually grew accustomed to my presence and allowed me to capture a rare, quiet moment of its early-morning hunt.

Red foxes are remarkable survivors, thriving in a variety of environments that range from desert to tundra. In Yellowstone, winter tests every creature, but a fox’s keen senses, patience, and agility allow it to thrive. Against the backdrop of the frozen landscape, its presence was a reminder of the tenuous line between merely surviving and surviving well enough to perpetuate the species.
