12 x 8″, Hahnemühle Photo Rag Arc of Atmosphere
Above Alaska’s winter landscape, the aurora unfolds in sweeping arcs of moving light, illuminating a boreal forest below. Sometimes called ‘taiga’, this northern ecosystem stretches across much of the Interior region and some sections of the Southcentral region. The coldest terrestrial ecosystem on Earth, the taiga is dominated by spruce, birch, and willow trees, and is shaped by frigid temperatures, fire, and long seasonal cycles of light and darkness. During the winter months, this forest appears undisturbed and serene, its snow-covered trees holding a memory of climate and time. The aurora introduces a contrasting energy: transient, atmospheric, and constantly changing. This work observes the meeting of these forces through a resilient landscape rooted beneath a sky defined by motion, transformation, and fleeting light.
